For over 50 years, LifePath has made a commitment to address local and regional needs throughout Franklin County and the North Quabbin community, as well as in Berkshire, Hampshire, and Hampden Counties, when it comes to supporting the needs of older adults, individuals with disabilities, and caregivers. Providing numerous life-changing programs, LifePath helps to strengthen our local communities by being a guiding force for so many caregivers and their loved ones, as well as our community partners. It truly takes the collective efforts of our volunteers, donors, staff, and community partners to make it all happen.
I find that as we progress from fall to winter, this change of seasons along with the onset of colder temperatures and lack of sunlight in the late afternoon sky can be especially challenging. However, I often find that as we change from season to season there are always things to look forward to. For me, colder temps mean new fallen snow and the opportunity to make snow angels, build large snow people outside, and enjoy cups of hot chocolate with marshmallows after a brisk winter hike . . . and the list goes on.
You see, making a difference doesn’t have to be complicated or grandiose to have a huge impact.
As we discover new experiences along the way with each changing season, we notice that with every new opportunity there is a potential possibility to make a difference. I think this is why, for me, Thanksgiving is so perfectly timed as we head into the winter season, serving as a friendly reminder that despite the numerous challenges that we all face, we have an opportunity to reflect on what we are personally thankful for. At the same time, it allows us to acknowledge that there are also those that might be having a harder time than us, and in turn provides an opportunity to get involved and to make a difference.
You see, making a difference doesn’t have to be complicated or grandiose to have a huge impact. Just by simply taking a quick moment to positively engage with other people, you immediately and exponentially make the world better around you. In the process, when enough people collectively step up to help, you notice that the combined efforts of fellow neighbors and local residents can have such a tremendous impact on the communities in which we live and work in each and every day. Sometimes all it takes is a small step towards becoming more involved in your community, and if others do the same, there’s no telling what can be accomplished in supporting one another, especially during tough times.
Similarly, individuals sometimes feel hesitant to make a modest financial donation to their favorite non-profit because they don’t feel that their gift is large enough or will make any difference. Nothing could be further from the truth. Every gift matters in supporting the good work that organizations do within our local community. For example, a contribution of $10/week can add up to an annual gift of $520, making quite an impact and helping to keep services going to those in need.
Your volunteer hours are just as important because your involvement helps to offset labor costs that would otherwise be needed to operate a particular program or provide a vital service in support of community residents. Together, your help and support make a real difference to the organization that you are helping and to the people they are serving.
With the Thanksgiving holiday quickly approaching, I traditionally take some time to reflect on the year gone by and how much has been accomplished towards making a positive difference in the world around me. It could be highlights surrounding my own family, the community in which I live and work in, or even within my own sphere of well-being. It is so important to look out for one another throughout the year.
One of the many things that I am thankful for is the opportunity to be a part of the LifePath team. Over the past year, I have had the privilege of talking with, learning from, and interacting with people as they share their stories, backgrounds, and experiences that all give a glimpse into what makes LifePath and our community so great. For example, stories from family members and caregivers on how LifePath has played a huge role in helping to make the lives of their loved ones a little better, connecting them to programs and resources that make a life-changing difference.
It’s also the handwritten card from a new donor expressing their gratitude for LifePath’s efforts in the community with the encouraging words “thought this would help” that keeps things moving forward despite the ongoing financial uncertainties. These positive sentiments give us all hope and also kindly remind us that despite our best efforts, we too, cannot do this alone.
Additionally, through my many quick conversations with people over the last year from various circles throughout our community, it has become abundantly clear that the Franklin County and the North Quabbin region is truly a very special place to live and work, possessing a creative resiliency and can-do attitude. As each of us share in our quest to find ways to continue to collaborate with one another, we look to try and maintain a certain quality of life for our local residents.
We hope that you will join us as you look to make a difference, no matter how large or small, because your involvement matters. Remember, it takes all of us to make a collective difference, and it all starts right here in your local community. Believe it or not, each of us has the power to make a huge difference for the better. To find out more about making a difference with LifePath, please visit Support Our Mission.
