With the official start of winter on December 21, the countdown to the spring season is officially underway, bringing positive reminders and memories of warmer temperatures, longer sunlit days, and blossoming flowers to enjoy. In the meantime, let us do our best to get through winter first. Of course, winter does come with its challenges, but sometimes we can find some positive highlights along the way, like trees covered with the fine powder of the latest snowstorm, or kids laughing as they sled with their friends or build snowmen together. I could go on forever. Whatever is on your list, do your best to make the most of the season.
The new year brings on a whole set of different emotions for people. For some it could be a new chapter filled with exciting adventures, while for others the new year could mean three more months of dark and gloomy days until daylight savings time arrives. Wherever you are along the path as you start your new year, LifePath can be a valuable resource in helping to guide you when it comes to supporting older adults, individuals with disabilities, and caregivers all throughout the year.
We are all amazing individuals, uniquely designed with specific skill sets and various talents to proactively move things forward in our lives and in the lives of others, too.
With the new year upon us, we find ourselves taking time to look back on all that we have accomplished and overcome in the past year. At the same time, most of us are well on our way to making lists of everything we want to tackle in 2026. It could be going on vacation, cleaning out the garage, getting together with family, or even volunteering for a local non-profit. The options of what to add to the list can be endless. I had a big list of things that I wanted to get done in 2025, but to be honest, I probably only got to half of them and that’s OK! As the universe has an odd way of introducing different opportunities and challenges along the way, we often find ourselves continually reprioritizing what’s truly the most important item to tackle at that moment, as we only have so much time in our day.
In crafting our direction for the new year and knowing that we are all creative thinkers, I encourage you to focus on the year ahead with a “I can do that” attitude vs. a “when I get to it” mindset. That’s where the power to make a difference within us lies. When we make that declaration within ourselves that there’s no time like the present to start broadening our horizons, that is the moment we can create real, positive change for ourselves and others.
I find that reflection and imagination can also be very helpful in trying to balance our own expectations of ourselves. Reflection allows us to gain a calming perspective in how far we have come, while helping to clarify what still remains on our to-do list. At the same time, by reflecting on all that we have accomplished over the past year, we discover an increased sense of self-confidence, as we hurdle over obstacles, preparing ourselves in some way for whatever lies ahead. In the process, imagination also provides us with the freedom to dream big and to muster the courage to not only plan, but to execute on our exciting new goals for the coming year.
The phrase “truly most important” this year has become such a defining statement for me and I am sure for others too. As life continually tries to dictate what needs our immediate attention, it is even more important for us to maintain a healthy balance in our lives. Every day we are faced with thousands of choices that require us to make split-second decisions based on the facts and figures on the table “at that moment,” helping to guide each one of us through our own individual and complex journeys. We really need to take the time to give ourselves a pat on the back each day for a job well done.
I truly believe that life was never designed to be easy, but rather to test us and challenge us along the way, helping us to grow in knowledge and strength, while applying what we’ve learned to the journey ahead—always striving to make ourselves the best that we can be. We are all amazing individuals, uniquely designed with specific skill sets and various talents to proactively move things forward in our lives and in the lives of others, too. Sometimes despite our best efforts, we run into a challenge that requires a little help and guidance. That’s where LifePath can potentially be a great resource to lean on with our caring, friendly, and knowledgeable staff. We were never expected to tackle life’s challenges alone, so let’s try to work on conquering them together.
With the millions of permutations and combinations in the world today, each of us has a special opportunity to make a difference in the lives of the people around us and in the communities in which we live and work. But most of all, we have an obligation to ourselves to keep getting stronger along the way, and always putting our best foot forward each and every day.
So this year, keep your expectations a little more reasonable, take time to take a break while enjoying things along the way, and stay flexible toward change and new opportunities that may unexpectedly come up throughout the year. By slowing down a little, we actually get to see a clearer picture of the world around us and in turn get to see how far we have come along life’s path. So go out there and live life to the fullest each and every day. You deserve it. LifePath is always ready to be a guiding presence along life’s path in making 2026 your best year yet! Happy New Year!
